Our sustainability and ESG mantra, “ACT,” is the guiding light for our strategy. Everything we do will be ambitious, calculable, and transparent, to align with a strategy that is impactful and actionable.

Our emissions targets

  • 50% reduction in scope 1 and 2 by 2033
  • Net zero emissions by 2040

Our climate goals currently focus on scope 1 and 2 emissions, as we can influence those the most. Scope 3, which include emissions from customer IT loads, will be evaluated in the future for benchmarking and goal setting.

Scope 1

Direct emissions from operations. This includes diesel emissions from backup generators and fugitive emissions from HVAC refrigerants.

Scope 2

Indirect emissions from purchased grid electricity.

Scope 3

Indirect emissions from our supply chain, including those from customer IT equipment.

Our energy targets

  • 100% carbon-free energy by 2030
  • 100% renewable energy by 2040

Carbon-free and renewable energy options are essential for data centers to reduce the environmental impact of their high energy density.

Carbon-free energy

Produced from resources that generate no carbon emissions, including marine energy, hydrokinetic, hydroelectric, nuclear, renewably sourced hydrogen, and renewable energy options.

Renewable energy

Produced from solar, wind, biomass, landfill gas, geothermal, municipal solid waste, or new hydroelectric generation capacity.

Social and governance goals

Alongside our environmental objectives, we have established several social and governance goals and metrics to complement our strategic plan. We look forward to sharing our progress on these and our environmental goals in our 2025 Sustainability & ESG Report.

Our social and governance goals focus on:

  • Safety of our employees within the data center
  • Data privacy
  • Operational uptime

We also track and monitor key metrics important to our business including: 

  • Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE)
  • Water Usage Effectiveness (WUE)
  • E-waste recycling and management
  • Green building practices
  • Employee engagement
  • Diversity, equity, inclusion, and ethical business conduct

Better Climate Challenge

In 2023 we joined the Department of Energy's Better Climate Challenge, committing to a 50% reduction in scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2033 from a 2022 baseline. This is aligned with our corporate emissions goal.

With this partnership comes participation in the Water Savings Network (WSN) and Waste Reduction Network (WRN), two groups that provide guidance on water and waste efforts across our portfolio.

In 2023 we joined as a partner with EPA’s ENERGY STAR program to utilize its best practices and resources to further enhance energy efficiency in our data centers.

iMasons Climate Accord

In 2024 we joined the iMasons Climate Accord, whose members are technology and infrastructure experts dedicated to advancing the design, construction, and operation of digital infrastructure across data centers, networks, cloud computing, energy, and cybersecurity.

Green financing

In 2024, Centersquare established a green financing framework and received a second party opinion from Sustainalytics.
